When I was home on maternity leave with our oldest, I knew that going back to work was what made sense for us financially. However, the thought of sending our 3 month old to a day care was nerve wracking. So, my wheels started spinning – I started brainstorming ways that I could still produce income, but also have a flexible schedule.  In fact, I think a lot of families these days are doing the same kind of brainstorming. My brainstorming led me to think of things that I could do to fill a need for parents – particularly those parents with small children. Because, two year olds – you can’t live with them, and you can’t take them anywhere, amiright?

At that point in our lives, however, we weren’t yet taking chances – chances like pouring a ton of energy into launching a blog! So when I suggested to my darling husband that we consider creating a space that parents could bring their children, and set them free in a safe and engaging environment – while enjoying, say, a cup of coffee, or a chat with another grown up – he basically told me I was crazy. And in his defense, there weren’t many, if any, similar places already in existence.

Ok, he didn’t tell me I was crazy, but his eyes did. He’s always very supportive, but also, not a risk taker. And before we experienced the life lesson that we could in fact survive on one income – with three kids no less – living off of one income while trying to build a business didn’t seem like the wisest choice.

So we didn’t ride in on the wave of ‘parent friendly’ play spaces, unfortunately. However, since our children are still young, we are certainly enjoying the trend.

These are spaces where children can play while the adults who are with them can relax a little bit – because the space is clean, child oriented, and contained in such a way that they don’t have to worry about anyone wandering off. They are great! Obviously, since I thought of a very similar concept eight years ago! Anyway, I digress from my fleeting dreams.

Recently, our youngest and I had the privilege of visiting the newest of these adult friendly, kid approved play spaces, and I am so glad that we went! Charming Star Playroom was founded by a local husband and wife team, Rick and Daile Haverdink. It is a beautiful and fun place to play! My son had such a great time, that when we passed it the other day he asked if we could go there again. (The answer is yes!)
