Coffee and Community in Havertown

One great thing about social media is the instant access to information, and although I find the personalized ads kind of creepy, at times it is quite handy. I don’t pretend to know exactly how it all works, but I do know that just by scrolling through my Facebook feed I stumbled across a place in my own town that I didn’t even know existed.

House Cup Coffee Roasters is not a coffee shop, though that’s what I was originally hoping to find. It’s a place that embodies the trend of the small batch, boutique creation of things people enjoy consuming – wine, whiskey, beer – and now coffee.

I’m sure it’s not a totally new concept in the coffee world, but it’s definitely new to our ‘hood.

And it is owner Brian Niles who has created a space for the true coffee lover right here in Havertown.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t quite know what to expect when I decided to stop into one of the House Cup ‘Coffee Labs’, but what I found was a very friendly and knowledgeable roastmaster, two friendly community members, and, free and delicious coffee. I’m a strong believer that food and drink draw crowds. I mean, it’s ultimately the free coffee that intrigued me. The concept is to bring people in to learn about the different coffee beans and roasts available, and to figure out what their preferences are, or simply find a new roast to try.

Once in the House Cup space, you will find a warehouse where Brian roasts the various coffee beans that he then distributes to local establishments. One of the places Brian distributes to is Havertown’s Oakmont Roots Café– another place that the Just Get in the Car crew is thrilled to have in town.

At House Cup Coffee Roasters, you can buy fresh and varied coffee beans – you can take them home and grind them yourself, or Brian will do it for you upon request.  There is even a specially made K-cup option. Other coffee related merchandise and t-shirts are also available.

I get the sense that while coffee is the vessel, community is the goal. Brian seems to be seeking a space for the people of Havertown and the surrounding areas to gather and connect, and support one another and our local businesses.

Word is spreading about the Coffee Labs, and they’ve recently extended their hours.

Monday- Friday 8a -12p

First Saturday of each month 8a-12p

Havertown residents can get free or discounted delivery on coffee subscriptions, with options for how often to receive deliveries.

House Cup Coffee Roasters had a fun holiday event that we attended, sampling food from J.D. McGillidcuddy’s Brookline, whiskey from Dad’s Hat Rye, and wine from OneHope Havertown. I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot of these collaborative events in the House Cup space.

You should definitely take a look at their upcoming events, and consider stopping in to meet Brian, taste some coffee, buy some merch (as the kids say), and attend one of these fun events to support House Cup Coffee Roasters, and our community.
